I recently had an interview with the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND). As part of the interview process, I had to complete a short design task for the interviewees to help gauge my creativity, technical skill and ability to work within their brand guidelines.

Using the brand guidelines they provided, I had to design a set of three branded digital assets to promote the three key pillars of their work which was research, care services and support. 

The assets had to be designed for instagram stories and were static imagery. They had to provide a clear visual interpretation of each pillar and communicate their core brand message as well as appeal to their demographic.

Initially I worked on creating a bold headline that would catch people’s attention and give some context as to what the MND Association does for people, that may have not come across them before.

As the task was to outline the three pillars of their work, it made sense to choose a headline that said exactly that: “3 ways that we’re helping fight motor neurone disease (MND):”

In the body copy, I aimed to try and give a brief description as to what each of the pillars were, in 3 lines maximum. Technical considerations here was that the end user wouldn’t have time to read a long description

I used imagery and icons on each design to show the visual interpretation of each pillar and used colour to differentiate the designs from one another if all 3 were to be posted in the same Instagram story.

I aimed to use colour to appeal to the theme of each design as well (I’ve seen turquoise used quite a lot in pharmaceutical brands, blue can sometimes relate to care or hospitals, and pink seemed a more positive colour to pick for support). Overall I kept the colours in the primary brand and used the dark blue background as shown in the rest of their digital marketing.
