Frequently Asked Questions for Web Design

What's involved in the web design process?

There’s several steps included in working with you to plan, design, build and launch a website. These are:

  1. Project scope
The first stage is defining the full outline of your requirements, such as the setup of the domain and hosting along with the size of the finished site with any technical requirements.
  2. Sitemap
This is a short outline of the pages and will include the hierarchy of the different pages, and also a description of what each of the pages will include.
  3. Content planning
Working from the structure of the sitemap, I’ll work with you to define your content for each of the pages of the website.
  4. Wireframing
Once the content plan has been defined, I’ll produce a rough black and white plan to show the hierarchy of the content and different elements on each of the pages. You can think of the wireframes as the blueprint for the design.
  5. Styleguide
Once the wireframe has been approved, I’ll create a design for one of the pages that will show more of the finished style of the design in-situ. Considering the brand imagery and website structure.
  6. Visual designs
After the styleguide I’ll create a final design for review for the entire site. This will be tweaked and approved before the build to ensure everything is designed correctly before build.
  7. Website build & development
I’ll then build the site based on the visual designs and ensure the site looks inline with the visual designs in terms of the visual identity (colours, fonts, imagery, spacing structure etc).
  8. Testing & review
Once the whole site has been built, I’ll then begin some tests to make sure the site runs smoothly and as expected on all devices. We’ll then review the final site, and you have the chance to make any final changes.
  9. Launch
Depending on your requirements in the initial project scope, I’ll make sure the website is set live by configuring your domain and hosting if needed, and ensure you have access to the site.
  10. Optional training & monthly maintenance
Should you require any training on how to update the site I can do this with you, and also discuss a monthly fee for security, backups and general site maintenace.

How much input do I have into the design?

I like to work closely with my clients to strike a good balance between you having a design that you can be proud of, while advising on design decisions from my expertise.

Design is a 2-way process and I won’t present a design to you without any input from you.

I already have an existing logo and brand, can you work with what I have already?

Yes absolutely!

I’ve worked many times before with existing brands to create designs that are consistent with an already existing look and feel.

I'm not technical at all and know nothing about websites, can you just give me a bit of advice?

Yes no problem at all. I’ve worked with clients previously that don’t have much knowledge of web design. My goal is to create a website that you can go in and edit easily with a small amount of training which I offer as part of the web design packages. If you needed more training, I can also offer further sessions catered to your specific needs.

If you’re not sure what you’d like to achieve with your website, I’m always happy to  have an initial consultation to help you figure out how your website will help your business.

Do I have to have my own domain purchased, or can you organize that for me?

If you need a domain organizing, I can certainly look at that for you. Check out my web hosting page for more information.

I do recommend that clients have their own domain, just as if they wish to take this to another hosting provider in the future it will be a more simple process for them.

I have some imagery I'd like to use on my website, is it possible to include them?

It really depends on the resolution and what physical size the image is. If the image is too low quality to use then I’ll advise you of that.

It’s important that you have the rights to use that image on your website, as if you’ve just downloaded the image from Google, it could be at the risk of breaking copyright rules.

If you need some imagery creating by myself, or sourcing from a stock image site – that will be included in the price so it won’t be a problem if you have nothing to work with.

I want to add a few more pages onto the site seperate to what's included in the package, how does that work?

I’ll price each page accordingly depending on the complexity of what you’d like to include on the page.

A more complex page that has a different layout to the rest of the site will cost more than a page that uses the same template and just has some different text and imagery.

As a ballpark figure it would cost an extra £100 per page.

The price is quite a lot to pay upfront, what is your payment process?

I don’t expect a full payment upfront as that would be unreasonable.

Once we’ve had our initial consultation, I ask for a 25% deposit of the full amount of the package to secure both our time on the project, as websites can sometimes take weeks or months depending on the size to complete.

Then at other steps in the process, I usually break up the remaining balance into 3 other payments.
